Garlic is a plant that is used as a flavouring ingredient during cooking. Garlic can be found powdered form, oil infused, whole, crushed or in supplement tablets the most common form of supplementation being aged garlic extract (AGE).

What is Aged Garlic Extract (AGE)?
When raw garlic has been sliced and stored in 15–20% ethanol for over 1.5 years, it becomes aged garlic extract. AGE can be found in tablet, capsual and powder form.

Garlic and Health Benefits

Garlic and AGE may boost the immune system. Compounds present in garlic have been shown to boost the disease-fighting response of some types of white blood cells in the body when they encounter viruses, such as the viruses that cause the common cold or flu. Therefore Garlic may help prevent and treat the common cold and flu, it may also reduce the severity of symptoms.

Recommended dosing strategy

We still have a lot to learn in this area. Most of the studies on garlic and immune function use AGE as the form of supplementation with a dose of 2-3grams per day. It’s also unknown if you need to take garlic constantly, or if it also works as a short-term treatment when you start getting sick.

Potential side effects

When taken by mouth, garlic can cause bad breath, a burning sensation in the mouth or stomach, heartburn, gas, nausea, vomiting, body odor, and diarrhea. These side effects are often worse with raw garlic. Garlic may also increase the risk of bleeding.
